kevin and i are actually good friends. we met back in 2009 at a poster show in chicago, and talk and bounce sketches and concepts off each other regularly. hyper talented guy. this is one of my favorite posters of his.

hey everyone, my store reopens tomorrow, May 21st at 2pm EST.
up for grabs are my prints for my recent show at The Cotton Candy Machine in Brooklyn, NY. also going up will be a very small amount of matched variant sets of my 1964 Worlds Fair inspired art prints.
in a few weeks ill have a different batch of prints from earlier this year up for grabs, including my Artist Proof copies of Psycho, my print for the Game of Thrones show at SXSW, the print i did for the latest record by the always amazing Pinback, and a few other goodies.

its 3:15am. i just finished wrapping and boxing everything up for the show this friday in Brooklyn. to say i am tired would be an understatement. to say i am not covered in a fine misting of clear coat spray would be a lie. to say i forgot to eat today would be the truth. to say my hands look like the worn tired grease smeared aged hands of an archetypal industrial mechanic would be an insult to mechanics everywhere because i dont understand how machines work at ALL. to say im intensely proud of the work i pulled off for this show after weeks and weeks of staying up until 4am nightly would be about accurate.
anyways, given ill be in Brooklyn, ill be at Pies’n’Thighs as much as humanly possible this weekend to celebrate-via-food the fact that next week i don’t have to do a goddamned thing.
hopefully ill see some of you there!

its basically just a tiny broom. scratching up as much black ink as i do, the dried ink scrapings can get onto your hands and smudge across the board, or streak if you sweep your hand the wrong way. just better to keep things tidy. usually theres a smaller wet brush in use that i use for blacking out areas with ink, but obviously i dont keep that directly on the board.

yup! i do a couple a year, including group shows. if you pop back a few pages on my tumblr youll see some installation photos of my last big solo show at Rotofugi Gallery in chicago. ill be at Cotton Candy Machine in brooklyn NY for a small solo show May 10th, and then in LA within the year for a very big to-do.

last summer i was heavily involved in a documentary about gigposters and the screenprinted art world, and i show up pretty regularly to talk about pretty pictures and depressing things and wear a silly hat. its a great look into the world and community of amazing artists and designers i exist within, see alot of awesome posters, and watch archers of loaf riff the shit out of the place. if youve got netflix, you can check it out here. its on instant watchy thingy. if youve got a local record store, the dvd copies came out on record store day. check it out.

How do you make your art? Specifically the night time illustrations, what programs do you use and what techniques do you employ?

ink on clayboard by hand usually, drawing in reverse because night time is more about light than shadow. that for like 100 hours. i eat alot of snacks. everything is scanned and then color separations are done digitally. then everything is screenprinted. check out the process posts ive made for Psycho and Game of Thrones.

this is a loose process of the original artwork for my exclusive print for HBO & Mondos Game of Thrones event at SXSW. i actually last minute pitched this image last summer as i was working on the first official print i did for Game of Thrones, as i had seen the episode this print depicts and lost my shit. but due to approval times and such, it just wasnt going to happen. so i was super excited to get to return to it this year.

all said and done this took me about 2 solid weeks, and these images represent the pencil sketch until the near final inks. before this was alot of mockups and roughs, and after this was all the prepress and color separations for screenprinting. i changed danys figure completely in the final stretch, so she looks a little odd here because she was just sort of a placeholder. once again, this is all higgins ink on clayboard with a fine does of endless patience with an etching tool. some HBO employees asked me if i had OCD after looking at it, a question i actually think might have some truth to it. im told the creators of the show purchased the original at the opening, so… thats pretty awesome.
